If you are using buttons, segregate your button stash. Choose those ones you dislike. Get the fabric with which you mean to cover the buttons. You can choose the fabric you have made the top or dress or select an embroidered fabric ( you can embroider letters and center them). Donot cut the thread, leave it hanging Keep the button or ring centered on the fabric Pull the thread until the circle is closed Tighten the thread and stitch the opening closed If you are using rings, you will need to stitch the front of this button along the inside of the edge. You can use a contrasting thread to make these stitches or embellish with beads or sequins To attach the covered buttons There are two options of attaching the buttons. First option is to attach them directly to the edge of the fabric. This is fine as long as the button is very small. The second option is to make a thread shank on the back. You will have to make a shank on the back of these buttons to attach them to your clothes. A thread shank is made on the back of the button for this. You will have to make a thread shank which looks like the thread bar we make to attach hooks on the clothes behind the buttons. Checkout the tutorial to make thread bar here. To make the buttons look good on the back as well you can cover the back with a piece of felt and attach the felt with ship stitches to the back of the buttons before making the thread bar. Cut a piece of felt smaller than the back. Attach it to the back using whip stitches Make two loops of thread in the center of the felt or the button if you are not attaching felt. Use a 3 inch diameter circle of the fabric. Cut another circle 1.5 diameter and place it in the center. Make the gathering stitches around the perimeter. Gather. Donot pull too tightly. You will get a flattened front. To maintain the shape you will have to make a line of stitching just inside the edge. Donot pull too tight.

Step 3: Thread your needle double and knot the end. Stitch around the outside of the circle with a small running stitch. Get as close to the edge as you can and use quite small stitches to make nice even gathers. Step 4: Place your fabric wrong side facing up. For flat buttons, place a very small piece of polyester fill in the center of the fabric. Domed buttons may not need the stuffing or you can just put a smaller amount to suit your taste. Step 5: Put the button in the center of the fabric on top of the fill. For flat buttons, it doesn’t matter which way up the button is placed. Domed buttons should be placed with the dome facing down. Shank buttons should be placed with the shank facing up. Step 6: Gently pull the thread so the fabric gathers around the button. Step 7: Once it is gathered pull a little tighter and put a few stitches through the back and knot off the thread. If your button has a shank make sure the shank is still exposed. This should give you enough overlap at the sides without being too large. Step 3: Use a basic running stitch to sew around your fabric circle.

Stitch close to the edge and leave a 3 inch (7.5cm) tail at each end without knotting them. Step 4: Place the top of your button face down on the wrong side of the fabric circle. Step 5: Pull your threads tight to gather the fabric and secure the ends with a knot. Cut the long threads off. Step 6: Now push the back washer over the button loop until it clicks into place. Depending on the brand, there may be one side of the washer which is required to be facing down. These Hemline brand buttons just required a firm push. I still love looking at all the available options there are in buttons, from vintage shell to vibrant molded plastic (much more elaborate than my old-school duckies). That said, sometimes the best look for a project is a fabric- covered button. Covered buttons are cool; there’s just no two ways about it.They come in the widest variety of sizes and are easy to find both in stores and online. If you can’t find the exact size you want in a kit, you can make your own covered buttons. Read our tutorial: DIY Covered Buttons (No Kit Required). You might say it helps button things up. The shank back is what we use since we are always sewing on our covered buttons. If you’re using buttons for scrapbooking or jewelry, the flat back is best. Finally, you need a pencil to trace your circles and scissors to cut them out. The fabric should gather up around the button shell like a little pouch. You can usually hear a small snap when the back seats against the shell. Don’t yank it out by the shank as that could pull off the button back. This not only further eliminates any problem with show-through, it also gives the button a bit more dimension and softness. However, it does add thickness, which is why the batting should not extend all the way out to the edge of the fabric circle. The fabric that will be tucked up and under the button back needs to remain as thin as possible. These kits are standardized, so there will be a limit to the thickness of fabric they can accommodate and still firmly snap together.

If even one thickness of your fabric is still troublesome, consider using a different fabric in a lighter weight. You can also fussy cut your fabric to center a pretty motif at the top of your button. You are just working along the fold and will need to more carefully place the half circle. Since it is not transparent, lift it up several times to check placement. The button backs also look slightly different. The teeth are designed to help grip the fabric and hold it in place so the back can simply be snapped into place by hand. When finished, both options work equally well. You can then pull the thread to help evenly gather the fabric around the button shell prior to snapping on the back. Again, the shank on the kit’s button back is standard and may seem small when you’re trying to stitch it onto your pillow front. Don’t despair! A good trick is to get your needle and thread going first. Make a few stitches right where you want the button to go to get your knot situated and your stitching secure, then continue stitching through the shank. This means there’s a button on the front and a button on the back and the pillow is compressed between the two buttons, producing the tufted appearance. This compresses the filler and makes a nice little dent in your pillow into which you can then stitch your buttons. If you’re still having challenges, try a curved sewing needle. I wish that there was a kit to make covered snaps, too, the large anorak type. I love what you do to inspire every week. Thank you!
